Week 2 results
The USFL season is just getting started, but it’s already looking good. The Birmingham Stallions opened their season with a 28-24 win over the New Jersey Generals. The Stallions scored 28 points in the second half and took advantage of the Generals’ injury to starting quarterback Luis Perez early in the first half. Luis Perez completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns before leaving the game.
In the second week, the USFL season continues with four games. The first game was played on Saturday, and the teams are all looking for their first win. The Stallions, Gamblers, Breakers, and Bandits all are looking to build off their Week 1 wins. All four teams are expected to win a game this week, but the results aren’t that clear.
The playoffs start this week in Canton, Ohio, where three teams are guaranteed to make the postseason. The Birmingham Stallions, New Jersey Generals, and Philadelphia Stars all have a chance of qualifying. The Philadelphia Stars, meanwhile, are the first USFL team to score 40 points in a game. If they beat the Michigan Panthers and Pittsburgh Maulers, they will have a chance at clinching the North-North playoff spot. However, they’ll need a stellar week from their division-rivals.
The Philadelphia Stars are a team on the rise and will be a dark horse for the USFL championship if they continue to win this weekend. They’ve been playing well the past few weeks, and Case Cookus has settled in nicely on offense. If the Stars win this week, New Jersey will have to lose their final two games and the Stars will not make it to the playoffs.
Philadelphia Stars vs. Birmingham Stallions
The USFL scores today are in and the Philadelphia Stars lead the Birmingham Stallions by three points. The Stars have to come back, however, to get the win. In the first half, the Stars held the Stallions to a field goal and led by three points at halftime. But things turned out differently later in the game. The Stallions scored on the next series, as the Stars failed to convert on a fourth-and-one conversion.
Birmingham is on the verge of a comeback, as they outgained the Stars in the first half. They averaged 10.8 yards per play. With just over two minutes left, the Stallions have a chance to push their lead to 11 points.
The Stars started the game with a lead, but the Stallions came back to win. QB Alex McGough was picked off near the red zone, but he made up for the mistake with a short touchdown pass to Victor Bolden. The Stallions led 26-23 with three minutes to play. After the Stallions recovered the lead, Scooby Wright returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown. However, the Stars pulled within three points, thanks to a touchdown pass from KJ Costello.
Birmingham Stallions vs. Philadelphia Stars: The Stallions won this game, but the Philadelphia Stars are still undefeated. They trailed the Stallions at halftime for the fifth time this season. After scoring a TD, the Stars tied the score at three, but the Stallions jumped to a 10-3 lead at the half.
Philadelphia Stars: The Stars have come out with a strong crowd and have a solid starting quarterback matchup. They will face the Stallions, who have the best record in the league. However, the Stars are just one game out of first place in the North division.
Michigan Panthers vs. Pittsburgh Maulers
The Michigan Panthers defeated the Pittsburgh Maulers by a score of 33-21 in their Week 3 matchup. With this win, the Panthers have earned the right to receive the first pick of the 2023 USFL Draft. Last week, the Panthers shutout the Maulers 24-0. The Panthers started the game off with a 21-0 lead and the Maulers were within nine points twice, but they were able to hold on to the victory. The Panthers’ defense was able to stop the Maulers’ offense and Jameson Houston stepped up to score the winning touchdown.
The second half begins with a touchdown by the Michigan Panthers. They take over the ball at the Pittsburgh 22-yard line after recovering a fumbled punt. The Panthers then score on a third-and-long play by Stevie Scott, who has rushed for 59 yards.
Both teams need to win to make it to the playoffs, and winning the game will earn them $850. It will also be a chance for scouts from the NFL to catch some standout players. The Panthers, who have just one win this season, have a formidable rushing attack. They average 141.4 yards a game and 11 rushing touchdowns.
In Week 3 of the USFL season, the Michigan Panthers have the opportunity to play in the playoffs, and the Pittsburgh Maulers won’t want that to happen. This game will air on USA Network at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
The Maulers have struggled to find a good quarterback. Last week, they released Josh Love and brought in Justin Lee, who played college ball at Georgia Tech. He helped the Yellow Jackets to get 588 yards of total offense against UNC in 2012. He also had two touchdowns on the ground. He will most likely be the Maulers’ quarterback going forward.
Detroit Lions vs. Indianapolis Colts
The Detroit Lions host the Indianapolis Colts today in an NFL preseason game. The Colts are coming off a loss to the Atlanta Falcons and the Lions won their preseason opener at home against the Buffalo Bills. The game will be broadcast on Fox 2 and NFL Network. Listeners can also hear it on WXYT-FM (97.1).
The Indianapolis Colts finished with a 9-8 record last season. Last year, the team was upset by the Jaguars, 26-11. The Colts’ quarterback, Carson Wentz, completed the game 17 of 29 passes for 185 yards. He had a passer rating of 74.6 and threw one pick. Indianapolis Colts receivers were led by Michael Pittman Jr. and Jonathan Taylor.
The Lions’ rookie safety, Traylor Boyle, looked good against the Colts, but was not very effective. He got lost in coverage and gave up an easy touchdown. However, his teammates played well and the Lions defended well.
In the first preseason game, the Detroit Lions won a close game against the Indianapolis Colts. The team played well without its starters, and ran the ball effectively to tie the game with 4:03 left. They also stopped an Indianapolis Colts 2-point attempt with 38 seconds remaining.
Detroit Lions vs. Kansas City Chiefs
The big-chunk Chiefs had a tough time against the Lions’ defense, which was able to shut them down. Patrick Mahomes was efficient in the short-to-intermediate portion of the field but struggled to throw deep. While he had a productive game overall, Mahomes failed to complete any of his nine deep passes. Detroit’s defense was also a factor, playing without Darius Slay, Quandre Diggs, Mike Ford, and a host of others.
